Starting a Jewellery Business

by Startacus Admin
We have in recent weeks written articles on Starting a Warehouse Business and Starting a B&B Business and this weeks its the turn of Starting a Jewellery Business...and, we'll start this post with a little asterisk...here it is*
*It's alright saying that you want to start a jewellery business and that's great - however like any creative job, role, or business, we are going to have to assume you have already worked out that you are pretty good at this type of stuff. Making Jewellery and making it more than just a hobby or something you like to do, means you really need to have talent in the first place - potentially even...specific qualifications. Nuff said - off the high horse and from this point on, we assume you have at least some of the above!
Some of the basics you will need to consider are...
-
Is there a market for your work - have you ever sold your pieces before and have people requested that you make them more / bespoke pieces?
-
What type of feedback have you been given previously?
-
Are you aware of other crafters who sell their wares locally - where do they sell them and how much can they charge?
-
Research the type of price you can charge depending on the standard of your work
-
Check how other Jewellery makers sell their goods - is there a local market / trade fair / popup shop that you could join or participate in?
-
What crafter websites could you sell your pieces on and do you need your own website as well?
-
Are there any grants or startup business funds available where you live to support your enterprise?
Planning and Development
-
Have you written a business plan? Do you know what a business plan is?
-
Where will you work? Will you work from home or have a unit that you pay to be in?
-
What type of equipment do you need and how much will it cost?
-
Making a business out of selling Jewellery can be tough to start with. Will you try and work on this full time or part time until you have created a presence and are regularly selling your products?
-
Where will you sell your products? Will you rent space in a popup shop? Will you try to sell to boutiques and retailers? Will you use crafty type e-commerce sites such as Etsy, Folksy and so on?
-
Do you need your own website? Who would be able to design your website? How much will that cost?
-
What will you call your Jewellery business? Can you think of a unique name that will make your business stand out?
-
How will you market your business?
-
Where will you buy the materials to make your jewellery? What suppliers will you use and will you try and keep your suppliers local / national or the cheapest price globally? How might this affect how you market your products?
-
Are you making bespoke, one off pieces, or creating a design that can be replicated and in bulk?
-
How do you plan to market and promote your business?
