Finance
-
Do you have a realistic idea of how much setting up the cleaning business will cost ? Do you know how you are going to raise the capital e.g. startup loans or investors?
-
In the beginning you’re most likely going to have to estimate your labour and material costs, so have you worked out how much you will have to charge in order to break even/make a profit?
-
Do you have a clear idea of what your monthly overheads will be? Do you know how much you will need to bring in in total in order to make a profit/breakeven?
-
Will you have a contingency fund in place in case you miss your target?
-
Will you be giving yourself a guaranteed salary or will you only take this as and when the business is making profits?
-
Who will manage the finances of the business? Do you plan on doing it yourself or will you use the services of an accountant?
-
Will you be extending credit to your clients? If you are dealing with other businesses this will almost certainly be the case, does your businesses have the capital to allow for this delay in payment?
-
How will your billing system work? Will you send out invoices on a certain day of the week or month? It is a good idea to coordinate this with your clients on system of invoice payments.
-
If you will be hiring staff either on a contract or casual basis how do you plan to pay them?
Business Practicals
-
Make sure that you are well aware of any legalities of running a cleaning service and follow all rules rigorously.
-
Make sure that you sort out any insurance practicals as early as possible and don’t forget any vehicles that will be used for the business.
-
If you will be employing anyone make sure that you are fully versed in employment law. The legislation changes regularly so keep an eye on relevant sources of information!
-
It is a good idea to have a clear company policy on matters such as equal opportunities and health and safety.
-
Are you going to have a bespoke database to record customer details? Do you know how to adhere to data protection laws?
So as you can see from this mammoth post there is lots to consider when setting up a cleaning business - the good news is that cleaning services will always be needed so they can be an excellent business opportunity which offers real scope for longevity! Best of luck!
