Ross Harrison, Startacus member and self-published author suggests:

Marketing!

"I would like to nominate Marketing to go in the dark, flaming depths of Room 101.

The monstrosities of marketing are too numerous to mention here. But do I really need to? Is there really anyone out there who doesn't yet know the unrequited back- and heart-breaking labour of Entrepreneurial Room 101marketing?

As a writer, finishing a book, editing it several times over, hiring another editor, hiring a cover artist, then probably editing it again feels like hard work. But then once that is done and the book is released, you realise that actually, the hard work starts now: marketing it.

It's as though you've climbed to the top of Mount Everest only to be told, 'Don't be silly, this is just base camp; now you have to walk to the top backwards and on your hands'.

Marketing is, of course, different depending on your product or service. There are pros and cons to each. Nobody needs a noir thriller novel like they might need the services of, say, a web designer. But, unlike that web designer, the novel has a title and a cover to quickly attract the eye and imagination, and the miniscule price means thorough research into the product is not necessary. The web designer has to work a lot harder to show that they're worth all the money they're charging, and they are exactly what the customer is looking for.

But no matter what product or service you are selling, I suspect the only circumstances under which you wouldn't gaze up at the looming thunder cloud of marketing and seriously consider going for option B - being beaten about the groin by a banana-wielding lunatic - is if the service you are trying to sell is marketing.

So drop it into the pit and let it burn.
