The lowdown on YesWeHack, the Paris-based startup that's crowdsourcing vulnerability management via its global community of ethical hackers

YWH-black.In May (2021), we wrote about the importance of cybersecurity and how far out of the ordinary person’s grasp the topic is. Startups like Hack the Box help us to understand the vulnerabilities of our personal devices as well as the wider network we’re a part of at work, but being aware of it and how to best protect against security threats is only the beginning.

Unfortunately, the people who are looking to exploit those vulnerabilities are more knowledgeable than you, more skilled, and have more time on their hands to exploit them than you have to shore them up. This is where bug bounty programmes come in. This is a process in which ethical hackers are paid to detect vulnerabilities so that they can be fixed.

YWH LOGO.Paris-based cybersecurity startup YesWeHack has created a bug bounty platform. It is a global community of cybersecurity experts who know that traditional approaches to cybersecurity are no longer sufficient, particularly since the pandemic forced most of us to work from home, increasing vulnerability significantly. The platform connects more than 25,000 ethical hackers across 170 countries, essentially crowdsourcing vulnerability management for clients’ networks, websites, apps, devices, etc.

There’s no better way to understand and fix the vulnerabilities in your systems than having the very people who know how to find and exploit them helping you to up your security. Of course, the platform adheres to strict European standards and regulations to ensure the safety and privacy of clients as well as the bug bounty hunters. The client submits the scopes to be tested and can open it up to the whole community, or they choose a hunter they want to do the testing.

In July, YesWeHack announced that it had raised €16 million in a Series B round led by Banque des Territoires and Eiffel Investment Group, with Normandie Participations and CNP Assurances, who also took part in the startup’s Series A round. The funding will be used to accelerate R&D, and to expand internationally, hiring 100 new employees around the world over the next 18 months.
