The lowdown on London-based startup BeneTalk and its mission to develop the gold standard evidence-based digital therapeutic solution for stuttering.

benetalk appStuttering (or stammering) affects around 1 in every 50 adults, or around 70 million people around the world. Stuttering is an interruption of speech flow, and it can cause frustration, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Those affected can sometimes avoid social situations, isolating themselves and affecting their relationships, education, and even career prospects.

While people are, of course, wildly different and handle stuttering differently, in some cases it can lead to embarrassment, shame, and even depression, as well as a constant fear of being judged or misunderstood. However, with appropriate support, therapy, and acceptance, people who stutter and experience these feelings because of it can overcome these challenges and regain confidence.

London-based startup BeneTalk is providing people with this support and therapy. They call their app a ‘habit-building app to support you along your stuttering journey’, and they say that it provides out-of-clinic support to anyone who stutters and empowers speech therapists to offer support before, during, and after therapy. The app provides a way for you to practise speaking aloud, in the comfort and security of your own private space, and provides real-time feedback through habit-building exercises.

It helps you to become more comfortable with the fact that you stutter, while tracking the change over time in your feelings and thoughts regarding the stutter, as well as any changes in your stuttering. As well as this, speech therapists and people who stutter have developed courses to help manage tension and anxiety linked to stuttering, and there is a community section of the app where you can connect with other app users around the world.

Following on from a recent £400,000 award from Innovate UK, BeneTalk are raising additional funding through Seedrs. This will be going towards developing the product further for children and teens specifically, as well as research studies, and further expansion into the US market.
