Aire - the world's first personal digestive tracker

foodmarbleWhen food does not properly break down in our digestive system, fermentation causes gasses such as hydrogen and methane to be released. These can cause all sorts of problems, not least of all pain and bloating.

Different people are affected to varying degrees, and our digestive systems handle foods differently, which is why most of us know someone who always seems to be complaining about bloating - like in those adverts where they talk about bloating so much that the last word you ever want to hear again is ‘bloating’... Because these gasses make their way through our bloodstream to our lungs, and then out on our breath, until now the only way to know if you were breathing methane was to blow on a match. No longer!

AIRE device from FoodmarbleThe AIRE device from Dublin startup FoodMarble is a small, portable breathalyzer designed to be far more accessible than the methods of breath testing used in hospitals.

Along with the companion app, the AIRE will test how much gas is being generated by the food you have just eaten, helping you to track which foods are best and worst for your particular digestive system. By including your symptoms, stress levels, and sleep, the app can put everything together to build up a personal digestive profile.

In 2016, FoodMarble was accepted into arguably the world’s largest hardware startup accelerator, HAX. This allowed the team to go to China and develop their AIRE prototype into something of consumer grade quality. Recently, they secured £1.3m in funding from investors including London’s Breed Reply and Sean O’Sullivan, formerly of the Irish Dragon’s Den. With this funding, they intend to expand their staff as they go forward with bringing their product to market.

With about a billion people worldwide affected by digestive problems, such an accessible and simple device to help them out is...wait for it...a breath of fresh air!
