ZIPZERO is an app that's tackling the cost-of-living crisis by enabling consumers to monetise value in their shopping data and earn cash towards their monthly bills.

zz01_lp_headerimg3.We all have bills to pay, unfortunately. Worse is that those bills are constantly on the rise, with energy companies eager to pass on any increase in their own costs to us so that their CEO’s wallets don’t take a hit. In the UK, at least, we are in the middle (or perhaps only the start) of a cost-of-living crisis, and many people are having to choose which bills to pay, because they can’t pay them all. In the meantime, advertisers are struggling to find ways to better understand their audience in order to better tailor their marketing. These things might seem entirely unrelated, but what if you could make those bills easier to pay by helping those advertisers?

Aberdeen-based startup ZIPZERO has built a platform to allow people to, as they put it, have greater autonomy over their personal shopping data. They do this by giving you a way to monetise that data, and put that money towards paying off utility bills. Whenever you shop with any of the partnered brands - which include names like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Boots, Amazon, B&Q, eBay, and many others - you simply take a photo of your physical receipt or email your digital receipt, and you earn rewards that then go towards paying off phone, electricity, council tax, internet, and other utility bills. As the startup gains insights into your preferences, they are able to offer Premium Offers which will net you bigger rewards.

These rewards are funded by brands, retailers, and financial institutions looking to benefit from the shopping data you provide. This data is anonymised, and the startup says that they will never sell personal data - only this aggregated, anonymised data.

In early 2023, ZIPZERO announced that they had raised over £1 million in seed funding from various angels. This funding will go towards growing the platform to include more retailers and onboard more users to add to their 100,000+ UK user base.
