Zedsen - making proactive health a reality
by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on the London-based health-tech startup Zedsen that has developed technology that can monitor the user’s bloodstream and collect data by using sensors that simply sit on top of the skin
Needles. If even the word makes you squirm and look for the nearest door, window, or easily breakable wall, today’s startup might be what you’ve been waiting for.
Quite a lot of data about the body can be gathered non-intrusively, with plenty of apps even using smart phones’ built-in sensors to do so. But heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature can only go so far, and when it comes to checking for something like diabetes, the skin still needs to be punctured and blood taken. But as technology develops, perhaps it can reveal ways in which sticking tiny pipes into people’s plumbing isn’t the only way to go about things.
London-based health-tech startup Zedsen has developed technology that can monitor the user’s bloodstream and collect data without breaking the skin, but rather with sensors that simply sit on top of the skin.
These biosensors create an electrical field that measures the permittivity and conductivity of materials; data which Zedsen’s algorithms can interpret and use to monitor trends in the body. The startup hopes to be able to use this technology for a wide range of applications, including fertility tracking, monitoring metabolic health, and even diagnosing and monitoring diabetes.
They say that the gathered data allows for ‘hyper-personalised’ insights about health, fitness, diet, and even emotional wellbeing, with support and suggestions unique to each individual user, helping to prevent many illnesses and keep people healthy.
In early April, Zedsen announced that they had raised $12 million in funding from a range of investors, including the chairperson of the Red Cross, and during which Dr. Caroline Hargrove, former CTO of Babylon Health, was appointed Chief Technology Officer of Zedsen, bringing her extensive knowledge and experience to the startup.
It seems like we’ve taken another step towards that Star Trek future of pointing a little box at a patient and knowing everything that’s wrong with them without blood and the room spinning and the tunnel vision… We’re going to have a lie down.
