Ybrain has created a headband to fight depression

by Startacus Admin
A South Korean startup, Ybrain has created Mindd, a headband that performs a process called transcranial direct current stimulation - to combat depression.
We have written previously about depression among entrepreneurs, and it is a serious and prevalent problem - and certainly not just in the world of entrepreneurship. In South Korea, the suicide rate in 2015 was 38 people every day. It’s no wonder then that the South Korean startup Ybrain thought it was time to do something about this huge issue.
This is where electrocution comes in. But the good kind. The South Korean startup has created Mindd, a headband that performs a process called transcranial direct current stimulation, in which the frontal lobe is stimulated with...well, a direct current. Decreased activity in the frontal lobe is linked to depression, and what better way to stimulate activity than with a (albeit weak) electric current?
As with the majority of wearables (or anything else these days), Mindd comes hand-in-hand with an app. Users can keep a log of the activity and exercise, their sleep patterns and quality, and any medical treatment, and this information can all then be sent to their doctor. 12 hospitals throughout South Korea have already adopted the headbands for clinical trials for KFDA approval, and have so far found them to be effective.
Over the past 4 years, Ybrain has secured $9m in funding, and with its continuing growth, it intends to bring Mindd to Europe later in 2017. This is just the beginning of what Ybrain is looking to do with their products, with diagnosis of and treatment for a host of other psychological conditions in the pipeline.
