Xtremedy Medical - medtech innovation to tackle infection

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on Xtremedy Medical, the Galway-based medtech startup that's on a mission to improve infection treatments and help prevent unnecessary amputations
No matter how advanced our healthcare becomes, it can still be in many ways pretty barbaric and severely lacking. We’re certainly a long way from the Star Trek world of pointing a bleeping device at someone and they’re magically healed.
One of the biggest issues we still face today is infection, particularly infection in deep tissue or bone. These require multiple surgeries, long hospital stays, and long-term use of antibiotics, and even then, for 20% of patients, an amputation is ultimately the only way to control the spread infection.
Galway-based medtech startup Xtremedy Medical has set its sights on reducing this need for amputation. Currently, other than antibiotics, the best way we have to try to treat below the surface of a wound is by mechanical means, which can do more damage to the wound and even push the infection deeper, causing half of patients to need even more surgery.
Xtremedy Medical’s solution is a surgical device that delivers electrical signals through the wound to treat both the surface wound and below to ‘zap’ any residual infection deeper down. The technology is non-thermal and non-mechanical, which means it preserves the integrity of the wound during treatment. The result is the opposite of what we mentioned above: fewer surgeries, reduced stays in hospital, and shorter antibiotic courses.
The startup’s class II device is a patent-pending technology with proven anti-microbial properties, and uses technology previously approved by the FDA, which will no doubt aid in their expansion into the US market. Currently in the process of spinning out of NUI Galway, XTremedy Medical won Enterprise Ireland’s Big Ideas 2021 ‘One to Watch Award’ this November, out of a group of 12 investor-ready startups. With such an important invention, prime to change lives - or more accurately, prevent lives being negatively changed - we think we’ll be seeing a lot more awards going their way.
