Why should I journey down a freelancing career path?

by Startacus Admin
Parasol investigates the reasons why a growing number of professionals are turning to freelancing, and the advantages that this career path can offer.
A recent report compiled by the European Forum of Independent Professionals (EFIP) shows that the number of freelancers has increased by 82 percent since 2000. With a growing number of people deciding to go it alone, you may be thinking about also taking that leap of faith and getting your very own slice of the freelancing action.
There are numerous advantages for those willing to put the time and effort into a freelancing career. From a greater sense of freedom to a higher income, many find that their working life is all the more enjoyable when becoming their own boss.
Freelancing benefits
All manner of freelance businesses have sprung up in recent years as people with different skills, knowledge and experiences look to reap the benefits of this particular career path. Once you have worked hard to get your name out there and establish a strong client list, you can take advantage of:A better work-life balance - you have more of an opportunity to prioritise your personal life, as you are not expected to attend a workplace at a specific time every day. You can take up invitations, enjoy days out on a whim and spend more time with your family, tailoring your work around other activities you want to take part in.
Greater freedom - you can establish your own development plan, client list and pay, rather than having to fit in with an employer's requirements and goals. You also aren't restricted by any office policies, and can instead create a schedule and career completely tailored to you.
High freelancer demand - A recent Jobs Outlook report found that a third of employers believe that they will use more contractors in 2013, meaning that there are likely to be more opportunities for you to pitch to potential clients, work on contracts and establish a strong freelancing career this year.
Choosing your own hourly rate - you can decide to charge a rate that is in line with your experience and expertise, while you can also tailor your wage so that it matches your lifestyle and outgoings. You also have the opportunity to take on more clients if you find that you need additional funds.
Job security - many believe that being employed by a business has more job security than freelancing. However, organisations can make you redundant at any time. When freelancing, you are able to continue working for as long as possible, if you continue to put the time and effort into winning clients and producing quality work.
Of course, these top five benefits merely scratch the surface of the advantages available to you when going it alone. From national exposure to not having to commute or fork out for expensive lunches, there are many more reasons why freelancing is considered to be a highly favourable alternative to a typical office job.
