WeAre8 - the sustainable advertising platform

by Startacus Admin
London-based WeAre8 is on a mission to empower us all to change the world in just two minutes a day.
We are bombarded with ads all the time, on every website, on every social media platform. They rush in at us from all sides, spouting nonsense about things we couldn’t be less interested in, annoying us, perhaps even making us actively avoid whatever that brand is out of pure spite. But what if you had the power to choose when to watch those ads, and made money for charity and perhaps yourself while doing so? It would be a lot easier to stomach ads then.
London-based social good startup WeAre8 has built a hate-free social app to, they say, ‘empower billions of people and thousands of brands to come together in a place free of judgement and hate, enabling love, solidarity, economic empowerment and positive action to solve the world’s biggest problems’.
The idea is that WeAre8 users can change the world with just 2 minutes every day. Rather than billions being spent on ads that aren’t engaged with, the platform encourages brands and users to come together to engage cooperatively, and for every ad the user watches, 50% of every £1 goes into their own wallet. This can be used to pay an EE bill, forwarded to a charity, or withdrawn to PayPal. In addition, 5% of all advertiser spend goes to charity and to carbon offset. It is a platform looking to answer the question of what would happen if the massive amount of funds directed into un-engaged with ads was redirected into something to help the world.
In March, WeAre8 - already backed by ex-footballer Rio Ferdinand - announced that it had raised £11.4 million in a Series B round led by Centerstone Capital’s venture fund. Channel 4’s VC side, Channel 4 Ventures also took part and has taken a stake in the startup, and WeAre8’s first TV ads will run on Channel 4’s range of platforms soon.
