Travel that you can feel good about - Viatu is the next-gen travel platform that lets you design, share and book your complete sustainable trip with ease.

download (23Most of us like to go away when we get time off work. The problem is that planning and booking a trip away can equal the stress that we’re trying to escape. Not to mention that there’s no getting around the fact that travelling abroad comes with its own environmental issues that you might not want to be contributing to. No one wants to lie on a beach or float in a pool feeling guilty about the amount of emissions you contributed to on that flight over. So perhaps there’s a platform that can help with both of these problems at once…

giraffe-in-etosha.jpeg__670x670_q85_crop_height-670_subsampling-2_upscale_width-670Swiss startup Viatu has developed such a platform. Its goal is to provide travellers with transparency and control over their holidays to simplify the process of planning and booking it as much as possible without depriving us of options, while simultaneously showing us the environmental impact of the trip.

This is about the positive impact of tourism, too: the millions of jobs that the industry creates and sustains, the portion of the economy that is owed to tourism, the environmental issues that are highlighted and the sociocultural education it can provide. Viatu wants to push the positive impact of tourism as much as highlighting and lessening the negative impact.

The startup says that they have integrated principles of sustainable tourism into all levels of their operations: the destinations they offer, the providers they partner with, the impact of their customers, and their internal operations.

Their offerings are interested in sustainability issues including promoting the heritage and traditions of local communities, a commitment to preserving the authenticity of a destination, increasing the number and quality of local jobs, and including residents in deciding the role of tourism in their communities. Viatu also integrates the Squake API, which provides carbon calculations for everything involved in the trip. This lets Viatu make climate contributions or purchase the credits on behalf of their users once the trip is over in order to offset emissions.

Recently, Viatu announced that they had raised $1 million in a seed round led by Ndoto LLC, with participation from ASI Reisen and angel investors. This funding is going towards furthering the development of the platform.
