Artist John Kerr set to exhibit a series of personal paintings at The Spot, the urban-art focused gallery in Derry as part of Culture Night 2022.
Opening Friday 23rd September as part of the annual Culture Night celebrations, UV Arts will host local artist John Kerr in an urban-art focused gallery in Derry with his solo show entitled “Movement”.
John Kerr, artist and current Head of Art and Design at Derry's Lumen Christi College, will exhibit a series of personal paintings at the urban-art focused gallery at Bishop Street, Derry on 23rd September as part of Culture Night 2022.
John Kerr’s work represents a personal involvement with the act of painting, a struggle with the surface of the painting, the juxtaposing of shape and colour, space, repetition and structure.
John's solo show “Movement” and the works' subject matter is inspired by a wide variety of sources, including his immediate surroundings, the landscape, found materials and others’ artworks.
With a wide range of influences, including British abstract work from the 1940’s and 50’s - such as that by artists Peter Lanyon and William Scott, as well as the surface qualities of crumbling Renaissance painting, the oil and acrylic-focused show, featuring paint sourced from recycled plants, makes for an exciting exhibition, that is sure to inspire both seasoned artists and the general public alike.
Culture Night is a national moment, celebrating all that makes up the richness and diversity of culture in Ireland. John Kerr's show will add to the exciting array of events open to the general public across the North West as part of this special evening. Culture Night is a night of entirely free entertainment, activity, discovery and adventure, when Arts and Cultural organisations across the island open their doors for inspirational and imaginative events, tours, talks and performances, for people of all ages to enjoy.
UV Arts are currently continuing their takeover of the Garden of Reflection Gallery, in partnership with the Inner City Trust, aiming to create a new and exciting gallery experience for Derry city. The urban-art focused gallery, named “The Spot” is hosting a series of alternative art exhibitions by local, national and international artists throughout 2022 and 2023, in addition to UV Arts' ongoing street art and contemporary mural movement across the city and district.
"The Spot" gallery hosts a series of workshops and demonstrations, and will shortly launch “School for Street Art'', promoting and educating people and places via street art and contemporary mural arts, in addition to having an alternative art store stocking all the tiny tools required to create colossal art and also a podcast studio that can be booked by local creatives and businesses.
UV Arts aims to educate, promote and change perceptions of public spaces via street art, graffiti and contemporary mural arts. Specialising in large scale outdoor murals, advertising and community-driven initiatives, Karl Porter and his team are involved in many creative and collaborative projects across the North West.
Based on Bishop Street, “The Spot” Urban Art Gallery will open its doors on Friday 23rd September from 5pm - 10pm for John Kerr’s ‘Movement’ show with refreshments provided. The exhibition will continue until mid-October.
