The startup on a mission to transform the energy system

Upside Energy - The Manchester based startup that's creating innovative digital solutions that support the energy management systems of the future

Manchester-based Upside Energy wants to help bring an end to this reliance and usher in a new era. Upside is a cloud-based platform that can connect with a multitude of devices across commercial, industrial, and domestic sites, including battery storage systems, electric vehicle charge points, UPS, and heating and cooling systems.
It can support over 100,000 devices running in parallel. Using advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence to match energy demand with the available supply, it helps the electricity grid deal with fluctuations and times of peak usage. Customers benefit from a significant reduction in both energy costs and carbon emissions.
Because the platform works in the cloud, in real-time, Upside can respond rapidly to market signals and deploy new solutions as the energy system evolves. That means they can give customers immediate visibility of their energy usage and device performance, identifying opportunities as they emerge.
Upside Energy has been doing well since its creation in 2013 for the Nesta Dynamic Demand Challenge. Not only did it almost immediately start receiving funding for pilot projects, but it has been winning awards and recognition left, right, and centre. These include reaching the EDF Blue Lab final, being named national winner of the Shell Springboard programme in 2017, and winning the 2018 Ashden Award for Energy Innovation. So, in other words, it’s all upside for this startup!
