The Joy Club - on a mission to bring joy to retirement

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on The Joy Club, an online activity club that provides classes, activities and inspiration galore to help people make the most of their retirement.
Retiring is supposed to be an exciting time, when you are finally free to do what you want to do with your life, travel to the places you always wanted to travel to, spend more time with friends and family, etc. But sometimes, people will get to retirement and sit around the house wondering what to do and what time Antiques Roadshow is on.
What happens when you’ve fulfilled your lifelong dream to hike up to Machu Picchu and been spat on by the llamas while you catch your breath? You don’t want to find yourself whiling away the days sitting in front of the TV and wishing someone would visit, so how about some kind of club with regular classes and activities to bring, perhaps, joy to your retirement?
London-based startup The Joy Club has created an online platform for this purpose. Joining the site gives you access to a broad range of classes and activities, live and online. These could be expert talks on various diverse topics, classes on nutrition or mindfulness, Tai Chi or Zumba classes, book clubs, art classes, concerts, and much more. As well as teaching people new things and keeping your mind and body active, all of these are ways for you to meet new people; and although it’s all done online, that only means that you can meet people from all over the country, and there’s nothing to stop an online friendship being taken offline too.
The Joy Club recently announced that it had raised £1.1 million in a funding round participated in by Google Maps co-founder Lars Rasmussen; Elvie co-founders Tania Boler and Alexander Asseily; as well as Calm/Storm Ventures, Alma Angels, and other angel investors.
With 9 million retirees in the UK, and 90% of over 65s using the internet, The Joy Club is in a great position to really help enrich the lives of those suddenly finding themselves with an abundance of free time in a world preoccupied with those a fraction of their age.
