The Hiut Denim Company

by Startacus Admin
Let’s face it, these days most stories that we hear about manufacturing tend to be a little on the gloomy side, yet there are good things that happen too! One of those ‘good things’ is the inspirational Hiut Denim Company.
Grab yourself a cuppa and we’ll begin...
Once upon a time in Cardigan in Wales there were 400 people who every week made 35,000 pairs of jeans and did so for over 30 years. When you consider that the population of Cardigan is 4000, that’s a pretty sizeable number! Then one day it all stopped - production moved overseas and the machines were switched off. The skills, the passion and the craftsmanship still remained though and was the inspiration behind the creation of The Hiut Denim Company. The husband and wife team of David and Claire Hieatt had an idea: “Our town is going to make jeans again” and set about creating a new business using all of those skills and talents but with an innovative twist.
The Hiut Denim Company is the first jeans manufacturer in the world where the jeans come with a History Tag. Each pair of jeans comes with a number that you can register on the HistoryTag website. From then on, you can build your memories of those jeans on the site - add pictures of you wearing them, where you went, who you were with, whatever..
The idea is that all those memories are saved, handed down and wherever your jeans turn up in years to come, the memories are with them.
The jeans themselves? Well, as you’d expect they’re pretty special. Made using quality denim by the ‘Grand Masters’ behind the sewing machine, they’re going to stand the test of time...
So what of the future? Will The Hiut Denim Company diversify and start making other products? In a word, no. They aim instead to “Do One Thing Well.” If only other companies had missions like that!
Just goes to show what you can do with a good idea, a little creativity and a whole lot of passion...
