The Centrica Active Ageing Challenge Seeks Startups to Shape Future of Active Aging

by Startacus Admin

Currently open for applications, the Centrica Active Ageing Challenge is on the hunt for startups with tech solutions that can help meet the needs of an ageing society.
If you have a product, solution or offering that could change the way technology can help older people, this fab new innovation challenge from Centrica could be for you.
Via the first ever Centrica Active Ageing Challenge, entrepreneurs and startups will be given the opportunity to win a slice of a £100k prize fund, designed to support the development of technology that will help people to thrive as they age.
Technology to transform the lives of the over 65s would have a huge impact on people across the country. Recent statistics from the Office of National Statistics revealed that 18% of people in the UK are over 60 and by 2040 this is projected to rise to nearly 25%.
Sam Salisbury, Director at Centrica Innovations, explained more about the reasoning behind the launch of the Active Ageing Challenge:
“Research we conducted recently found that many over 60s believe smart technology can improve their lives, but, despite this, they are often overlooked by companies that produce and market this tech.”
“Age is not a barrier to adopting technology. We believe smart technology has the ability to solve one of society’s biggest challenges – staying active and independent as we get older. That’s why we’ve launched our Active Ageing Challenge. We’re calling on the UK’s thriving start-up community to put themselves forward and apply.”
Centrica is committed to providing support to entrepreneurs and investing in new technologies that can change the world. Over the next five years Centrica Innovations is committed to investing £100 million to incubate and accelerate new technologies and innovations.
Centrica is already developing new technologies and products, like their leading connected home product Hive. Data science, smart devices and innovative business models will enable Centrica to become closer to customers in an enhanced partner role.
Over the past four years, Centrica Innovations has supported over 25 enterprises and committed £9m of investment to 14 startups. Together, they have offered products and services benefiting more than 25,000 people across the UK.
As part of the Active Ageing Challenge Centrica are looking for startups who could provide solutions in key areas including; providing care through smart home technology, achieving a seamless customer experience, and transforming care services.Startups have until 5th February 2018 to submit their applications and selected startups will then be asked to pitch to a team of industry experts in March (2018). As well as a share of the prize fund, winners could also receive the opportunity to access mentorship, valuable networking opportunities and the potential to partner with Centrica.
