Thalamos - improving patient outcomes in mental healthcare

by Startacus Admin
Thalamos is a healthtech startup enabling healthcare professionals to provide a swifter, simpler and safer experience for those in need of acute mental healthcare.
Unfortunately, the number of people in the UK who are being sectioned under the Mental Health Act is on the rise. Being sectioned essentially means being detained and treated for a mental health disorder against your will. This can, of course, be traumatic in its own right, and so the faster these patients can be put through the system and treated, the better.
One way to do this is to make the multitude of forms required throughout the process digital. Aside from being faster than the outdated paper method currently in use, digitising forms required for admission, treatment, transfer, and discharge also helps to reduce the risk of error, making everything safer.
London-based healthtech startup Thalamos was created in 2018 to digitise this pathway for patients in order for healthcare staff to “provide a swifter, simpler and safer experience for those in need of acute mental healthcare”. They say that digitising all of the forms required for each stage of treating a patient, from admission to discharge, reduces the risk of error by up to 89%, which reduces the number of vulnerable people who are left without treatment for long periods due to human error, as well as ensuring adherence to compliance.
Of course, as the need for mental health care rises, that outdated paper system also places an unnecessary increase in burden on admin staff and clinicians, adding to the existing stress and strain. At the moment, 40,000 mental health care staff are using Thalamos’s digital tools across 7 care providers, resulting in a reduction in access to treatment time from 7 days to just 15 hours, and the saving of a full nursing ward shift per week.
In August, Thalamos completed a seed round of £900,000, backed by Ascension’s Conduit Impact EIS Fund, as well as from a private Seedrs crowdfund and Angels, including Syndicate Room. They say that the funding will be used to “expand their team and strengthen their product, helping them to support more mental health care providers across the UK as they work to better support patients, clinicians and systems”.
