Tended
Tended - The startup that's created wearable tech designed to monitor the wearer’s safety and detect accidents...

tended logoBack in 2017, we wrote about a handful of startups in the safe-tech space, making life safer for the likes of runners, electrical workers, and the women of Delhi, to name but a few. Personal safety is, obviously, an important thing, but also something that most people don’t go out of their way to ensure.

Nor is it something people particularly want to get in the way or be in their faces yelling ‘You aren’t safe!’ all all times. So, ideally, something that looks out for your wellbeing, unobtrusively…

It just so happens that the Tended Protect wearable device does just that. The slimline wearable goes on your wrist and uses a combination of gyroscopic data, accelerometer data, and artificial intelligence to detect abnormalities in your Tendedmovements that would indicate an accident or period of non-movement.

An emergency beacon can be sent to your pre-arranged emergency contacts either automatically, if you have not responded to the device’s prompts after it detects something may be wrong, or with a pre-set number of taps to the screen. On top of that, it tracks steps taken, calories burned, and distance travelled, as well as connecting to third-party fitness apps for other health and fitness tracking.

Tended Protect connects to your phone using Bluetooth Low Energy and is set up with the companion app. It needs to be synced to your phone, which in turn needs a data or wifi connection to send out an emergency alert. These alerts contain live GPS location, what activity you were doing, and your health information. The emergency contacts then - and only then - have the option to turn on live audio to hear through your phone’s microphone and talk to you themselves.

Because Tended Protect uses your phone, there is no need for monthly fees, making it even more accessible. We are glad to see strides being made in this area of personal safety, and we look forward to seeing how this startup progresses in 2019...
