Studeo - the startup making elite tutoring accessible to all

The lowdown on Studeo, the edtech startup that has created a video learning app in order to democratise elite tutoring.
Education is a fundamental pillar of modern society. Yet arguably the best education often comes at the highest cost, available only to those who can afford it. Universities like Oxford and Cambridge are often considered exclusive and ‘elite’, and with many from poorer backgrounds will rarely end up in a ‘high performing’ school, this education inequality following them through to adulthood. The privately educated make up only 6% of the British population, and yet make up over half of Russell Group universities (i.e. the likes of Oxford, Cambridge, and 22 other world-class institutions). So how can this inequality be addressed?
London-based edtech startup Studeo has built a platform through which to challenge this and bring that elite education to the 99%. The app provides, in an affordable way, and ‘elite’, ‘top career’ tutors, as they call them, who graduated from top tier universities like those mentioned above, and teaches you in a way that is structured well for both remote learning and for general comprehension.
Rather than hour-long classes, lessons can be as short as 5 minutes, and the overall learning experience is based on the Pomodoro Technique, which has you learning in 20-minute periods, broken up by 5-minute breaks. This is a proven method to increase focus and information retention, and to get the most out of lessons. As well as this, spaced repetition of information helps you to retain information better, and Studeo says that this makes the difference between retaining 15% of information learned 6 months previously, and boosting it to 80%.
Through the app, you can learn from the videos, practice what you have learned, refresh your memory with flash cards, take part in MCQ tests, participate in forum-based Q&A sessions, and access live forums with the tutors. All affordable, and all focused on bringing the best education to anyone who wants it.
In May, Studeo announced that it had raised £1 million in a round participated in by investors in both the UK and the US, including Jenson Funding Partners and Sequoia VC. Currently, the startup’s market is the UK and France and their subject is only maths, but this funding will help them to expand to a wider market and move into the sciences as well.
