To help celebrate Black History Month and in recognition in some very small way of the contribution that black people have made to society, we thought that it was quite timely to feature as our latest startup of the week, a startup which is on a mission to support Black businesses.
Wakuda is a new online platform aiming to be the leading marketplace for Black-owned businesses in the UK.
Launched just last month, the platform has been created by two London-based entrepreneurs, Albert Larter and Nathaniel Wade.
Aware of the diverse range of creativity, talent and skills that exists within the black community, they wanted to provide a way to showcase this. They have created Wakuda, a platform that provides a space for black owned businesses to sell and directly promote their wares. All sorts of products are available on the platform - from artwork and skincare through to clothing and books. As they outline: “You can purchase anything - from the edible to the smellable, the drinkable to the wearable.”!
If you’ve got something to sell, you can get your account set up quickly, at no cost and the selling fees are pretty low.
Whilst new products are being added all the time, if you’re a buyer and you’re looking for something in particular that isn’t yet available on the site, the Wakuda team will even help you track it down!
Whilst Wakuda is in many ways an e-commerce platform connecting sellers directly to buyers, it is aiming to be much more than that.
By providing a dedicated space like this, it is helping to empower the black community as well as stimulate the black economy.
It is of course early days for this startup, however by having such a clear and invaluable mission, we reckon that this is most certainly one to watch!
