Startup of the Week - Oddbox

by Startacus Admin
Over the last few years, we’ve all become increasingly aware of the extent of food waste in the UK and the serious problem it has become. As with all such problems, there is an inherent need for us all to do what we can to find a solution.
Step forward therefore our latest startup of the week which is on a mission to do just that by proactively fighting food waste.
Oddbox is a London based Social Enterprise startup which delivers wonky veg and fruit boxes to homes and offices.
In essence Oddbox actively works with local growers and suppliers and sources fruit and vegetables which for one reason or another may not be deemed suitable for supermarkets. The fruit and veg may be a slightly odd shape, in a colour that is just not ‘perfect’, an irregular size or perhaps be simply surplus to the supermarket’s requirements.
Whatever the reason, this is still fresh and tasty produce and much too good to waste.
Oddbox use this produce to fill one of their Home or Work Boxes which can be delivered directly to your door.
The Home Box is aimed at residential customers and comes in 3 sizes - small, medium or large and there are both Veg boxes and Fruit and Veg boxes available. Boxes can be delivered weekly or fortnightly.
As the name suggests, the Work Box is aimed at the workplace! It consists of a Fruit box containing 5 varieties of fruit for up to 10 staff members. Forget the mid afternoon biscuit binge, this box provides workplaces with a week’s supply of healthy snacks.
Not only does Oddbox proactively address food waste, it also is doing its bit to fight food poverty - 10% of its produce is donated to local charities. It’s therefore a social enterprise that is doing good wherever and however it can.
At the moment Oddbox has a focus on London with the Home Boxes only available in the South of the capital and the fruit boxes available for businesses across the city.
There would certainly be the demand for a nationwide rollout of this service so hopefully that will be on the cards soon. We shall keep our eyes and ears peeled!
In the meantime, check out the short video below which will give you a little more insight into what Oddbox is all about.
