Startacus Entrepreneurial Room 101 - Week 1

by Startacus Admin
Option 1 : 24/7 Connectivity
Nominated by Amy Manuel Founder of the www.adaptationproject.co.uk
Since writing a post on arecent experiment that subjected social media junkies to 7 days without said social media and feeling a pretty intense sense of overload myself by the close of last year, I’ve been making a concerted effort to banish 24/7 connectivity.
I’ve been trying to concentrate on single tasks rather than needing to know what everyone else is doing simultaneously. It’s not easy.
Maybe if I was a millennial I’d have been born with the innate ability to email, like, share, follow and LOL all at the same time but since I actually remember a life without computers - let alone mobile devices - it’s come as a bit of a challenge to me. This still relatively new way of life is never more obvious than when you’re the only one looking up.
A few days ago I arrived at the RSA Skills Summit late, and so remained stuck in the lobby until we were allowed to sneak in. Thankfully the panel discussion was being streamed live for us so we weren’t missing out. And yet, it took two seconds to notice that I was the only one out of 10 people, actually watching the discussion we’d all come to see. The other 9 had their heads buried in their phones. For a good half an hour. Does that sound a little crazy?
For me, it’s become increasingly necessary to find the willpower to disconnect in order to think and create without distraction. And to have independent and unique thought unclouded by Google-able influence.
I haven’t mastered it yet, and I doubt I ever will. But just by trying I’m feeling more in control and well, calmer. So, what about you? What would happen if you turned off your smartphone for 2 hours?
