Solivus is a London-based startup aiming to make it as easy as possible for mega-buildings and home owners to decarbonise via their innovative thin-film solar solutions.

solivusWith the increase in electric cars, there is also a semi-related increase in demand for clean, renewable energy. What is the point in driving an electric car if the frequency you have to charge it using power derived from fossil fuel offsets the good you are doing? One of the most popular and versatile clean energy options is solar power, but it comes with some downsides. There are ways of getting, to some degree, around the need for direct sunlight, but what about the chunkiness of solar panels? The weight? These can be prohibitive for certain locations and applications. But maybe the solution is here.

London-based solar-tech startup Solivus is seeking to expand solar energy in the UK and beyond with its new innovation: flexible, thin-film solar sheeting. These rolls of sun-harvesters can be laid on rooftops previously unable to take the weight of conventional solar panels, surfaces without a large enough flat surface for those panels, and at any angle, meaning walls are also an option. This means it can be used in any residential or commercial location, and on transport infrastructure. The organic material is recyclable and contains no rare earth elements, and its small carbon footprint is offset in a matter of months.

The design of the Arc maximises solar energy capture and will be enough to power an electric car for 5,000-10,000 miles every year for around 20 years. They can also power a home, but one will be needed per bedroom (less so in sunnier locations than the UK).

In February, Solivus announced that it had raised around £2.3 million in funding in a round led by Founders Factory, and supported by Crowdcube. Solivus will also participate in the Founders Factory G-force seed programme for 6 months. This funding will go towards scaling and growing the startup.
