SMARTIFY aims to be your personal digital arts curator

by Startacus Admin
Officially launching in May, SMARTIFY aims to be your personal digital arts curator (think Shazam for the Arts)...we took a look...

Art is evocative, thought provoking, and possibly confusing. Some pieces we are happy to just enjoy, but others we want to know more about - more than the little plaque beside it can tell us. Who is/was the artist behind the name? Why did they paint this picture? Is a picture of soup cans really art? And other arty questions we can’t think of. An audio guide is all well and good, but you want to be able to move from picture to picture at will, rather than be beholden to the pre-selected tour.
SMARTIFY reckons it is the solution...
SMARTIFY uses augmented reality and image recognition to scan a piece of art and give you access to all the information you could want on it.
Scanning the art will also save it to your phone, allowing you to create your own mini art gallery. If your chosen museum or art gallery is a partner of SMARTIFY CIC, the app will also serve as a guide.
SMARTIFY CIC say they are focused on protecting the intellectual property of artists and galleries/museums, funneling profits back to public institutions. As a social enterprise, their mission is to support visual arts around the world, and to help people access & connect with art. (It reminds us a little in this sense to Museum in a Box which we also wrote about recently.)
With this innovation, the pictures really do paint a thousand words, so we’ll leave our explainer there, and let you make your own mind up…
