Shares - investing with a social twist...

by Startacus Admin
Think the financial market isn't for you? Shares is a startup aiming to ensure that investment is something anyone can enjoy.
Investing in stocks and shares is an enticing but daunting prospect. Promises of riches with minimal time and work are contrasted against horror stories of investors losing everything. It seems so simple, to put a little bit of money into something, and as they do their thing and get better at doing their thing and get better known for their thing, you make money.
But there is always that lurking shadow of legitimate doubt and concern, reminding you that things can go wrong quickly, and if you don’t really know much about the stock market, what can seem like almost a get rich quick scheme can turn into a file for bankruptcy quick scheme.
But perhaps going into it with friends, family, or colleagues - particularly those who know how to invest intelligently - is a good way to avoid too much strife and have trusted friends steer you away from bad decisions.
Paris-based investment startup Shares is making it easier for friends and family to collaboratively make investments, investigate investment opportunities together, share knowledge and advice, and point each other towards good opportunities, all in one app that combines stock market and social media.
Through the app, you can keep an eye on what your connections are doing with their investments so that if that friend who knows the market better than you suddenly sells all of their stocks, you can get on it and do the same, or jump on an opportunity someone else has spotted while it’s still hot. Hot being a term we baselessly assume the Wall Street fat cats use while they suck on their cigars in between bouts of shouting ‘sell, sell, sell’.
In March, Shares announced that it had raised £30 million in a Series A round led by Valar Ventures, and participated in by Singular, Global Founders Capital, and Red Sea Ventures, among others. Valar Ventures has previously invested in the startup as part of their seed round, which netted them a £7.5 million investment. Currently, Shares is only available in the UK, but this funding will help them expand through Europe soon.
