Self Starter drums up interest in unique 'drumkit in a box' instrument
We're going all Norn Iron on ya today. First up, we highlighted news that the NI based Propel programme was open for innovative startups and now here's another NI startup story for your reading pleasure...
A young self starter, Startacus member, inventor and musician from NI, Stephen Henderson is currently raising capital via Kickstarter to take his fab 'drumkit in a box' business forward. Hoping to drum up enough interest (sorry) for his cajon creations, Stephen's project is currently live on Kickstarter, and since he's a Startacus member, we just had to highlight it and try and 'snare' all your interest.
The story goes that back in 2011 the young 16-year-old, Stephen Henderson, began making cajons - also known as “a drumkit in a box” - for friends and family. Fast forward to now, and Stephen has already set up his own firm, Ruach Music, and manufactured and sold over 400 instruments - pretty rockin' I'm sure you'll agree.
Thought to have originated in Peru in the 16th Century, the cajon is a wooden drum that a percussionist can sit on, playing the front face with their hands. There are snare wires, or strings placed inside that give it its distinctive sound.
However Stephen has decided to give his own take on the product. Stephen explained:
“Percussionists voiced their frustrations with the traditional six-sided, wooden cajon, as they found it hard to create a consistent tone. I set about designing a style of cajon that would enhance the instrument both musically and aesthetically.”
Stephen has now launched his new version the LIVE series on Kickstarter, adding: “It is our hope that crowd-funding will help us springboard this product to success.”
And with that, this tale ends - or perhaps if we all collectively share this story, begins. Go support startacus member Stephen with his business venture, watch his pitch video below courtesy of YouTube and if nothing else drop the lad a 'note' or two of encouragement via twitter...
