Self Employed? Tips on managing a business when on holiday
by Startacus Admin
Take a holiday - when it suits the business
Balancing taking a holiday, against the requirements of your business and also when it suits your personal life can be a tough call - but can be made easier when you think about when is a good time - in fact great time to make that break. Does the industry you work in have natural seasonal peaks, when there is less chance you or your services will be needed? If you plan to take a holiday in the summer, is there actually more chance that some of the clients or customers you work for will be taking their holidays too - and therefore would you be quieter as well. Again we cannot answer this for you - but it would be a good idea to consider the above anyhow.
Get a Co-founder
Possibly the best solution to having a pretty much undisturbed break is to work alongside someone else. They say that two heads is better than one and this certainly applies when and if you decide to take a holiday. Yes, you may still have to touch base or ‘login ’ from time to time but you will at least know (as long as you trust the other person) that the work load and the office / business is being looked after. If you do not have an official cofounder - consider if you have a friend or family member that could help out / answer the mobile / take messages / respond to emails / and shift through the unimportant stuff to make sure that you only get told about the stuff that really matters.
Work before working hours
An option and one that many part time entrepreneurs and business owners already do. Work from the hours of 7am - 9am and respond to any issues / emails / paperwork / that you can, between those hours. After that enjoy the rest of your day. Some may say this approach is easier said than actually done and if you switch on your mind to work issues and work itself, you will never be able to enjoy any of the downtime you actually get. Try to avoid!
Close the Business
Again this option may seem or be unrealistic to many of you - but it is an option nonetheless. If you don’t have a support network to help out in your absence and you also definitely don’t want to work or think about work during your holiday - make plans from the outset that the business will be totally closed during this period - and stick to it!
Hopefully at least a few of the above tips will help you inmanaging your business when on holiday and if you like this post - you might also like our previous post on Work / Life tips for the self employed. Good luck!
