SeeAI - the startup that's using AI to help solve the shortage of radiologists.

by Startacus Admin
SeeAI is a Leeds-based startup that's on a mission to empower radiologists and help patients to get their medical imaging diagnosis within minutes.
Despite it being such an important part of society, our healthcare system has a number of shortages at the moment. There is a need for more radiologists, for example, who are overworked and burnt out, but having people who can look at x-rays and identify things like breaks and fractures is pretty important to modern healthcare.
The longer a patient goes without a fracture being identified and treated, the more damage it can result in, and the harder the healing process, especially for complex fractures. But in the absence of a queue of new radiologists waiting to be hired, what can be done to help?
Leeds-based medtech startup SeeAI has created an AI-driven system of doing some of the work of expert radiologists in order to alleviate some of this pressure. The startup applies machine learning to initial x-ray screening, quickly identifying the kind and severity of fractures, meaning that those patients can get treated faster and avoid any complications with more complex fractures. The goal is to also reduce the number and length of hospital visits while, of course, freeing up radiologists to perform the work that is beyond machines.
Back in 2020, SeeAI was one of only two companies to move past the first phase of a landmark project in Aberdeen to invest up to £240,000 in innovative data technology to screen radiographs of wrist and ankle fractures; a project co-funded by Opportunity North East and the Scottish Government.
Since then, the startup has been a semi-finalist in Tech Nation’s Rising Stars, a Northern Tech Awards Northern Stars 2021 winner, named as one of the ‘Ones to Watch’ on the Leeds City Region Tech Climbers List 2022, and a Women In Innovation Award 2022 winner.
But we don’t need all of these awards to see how valuable the startup and its AI are. This is a platform that helps both patients and radiologists, alleviating a little pressure and strain, and helping vital healthcare to move that bit more smoothly.
