savvy navvy - Boat Navigation Made Easy

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on savvy navvy, the app that provides "everything you need for a seamless boating experience, all in one place."
Boats. If there’s one thing we know about them, it’s that they don’t go on roads. And if you don’t have roads, how do you know where you’re going? We assumed it had something to do with seagulls, crows nests, and perhaps the stars, but it turns out that sea people have maps, just like land people. What they don’t have is Google Maps (not sponsored; other, lesser map services available) to get them to where they’re going and avoid heavy traffic and construction. But what if, say, a startup were to develop some kind of all-in-one navigation solution that people were to call ‘Google Maps for boats’?
Dorset-based marine tech startup savvy navvy has, by amazing coincidence, created an all-in-one navigation solution that has been called ‘Google Maps for boats’! The app combines a huge amount of information in one app in an effort to be something you can’t leave the marina without. This includes charts created by the startup’s designers using licensed UKHO, NOAA, and other official hydrographic office charts from around the world; tide data from more than 8,000 tidal stations around the world; a wind map and weather forecasts to keep on top of wind direction, speed, and weather conditions; GPS tracking to view your position in real-time and check your Course Over Ground and Speed Over Ground, as well as your distance from nearby features; and, probably what earned it the comparisons to Google Maps, the ability to plot your route in the same way you might across land - start and end points, which the app will then use to calculate your best route, with the option to move and delete waypoints.
There are many more features to the app, but we realised while listing them that there are too many to list, but they range from custom boat settings, to a wealth of local information, to personalised departure time optimisation. While the core product was designed with boats in mind, it can be used by many other water-borne lifeforms, such as paddleboarders, kayakers, and jet-skiers.
It will likely come to no one’s surprise after that far from exhaustive list of features that savvy navvy is currently sitting, at the time of writing, at 195% investment of its £600k crowdfunding effort on Seedrs. This overfunding occurred only shortly after it went live on Seedrs, and investment is still flooding in. This funding will help them to launch an enhanced version of the app, and continue to develop their features.
The idea is great, the pricing is amazing value, and the startup is rapidly going from strength to strength. We look forward to seeing more from them soon.
