SatSense - detecting subsidence from satellite data

The pain of subsidence is one that all too many homeowners know well. It causes our homes to list in a way that homes just aren’t built to do, and all kinds of cracks and structural damage ensue, leaving us with a house that we can’t sell.
Scale this up to something bigger, and it can put lives in danger by causing damage to the likes of gas pipelines, power plants, and transport infrastructure. All of this becomes much more worrisome in light of climate change, where hotter, dryer summers, and colder, wetter winters will be having a greater impact on subsidence than ever before.
Leeds-based startup SatSense has developed technology that uses satellite data to detect subsidence in the ground.
Their algorithms convert this raw data into datasets that provide the user with highly accurate measurements on ground movement, updated every 6 days. This technology is so precise and of such high resolution that it can be used not only for the large-scale, such as dams, power plants, and pipe networks, ensuring that infrastructure is kept safe and built on stable ground in future, but also at the property level for conveyancing, mortgage lending, and insurance.
Of course, this platform can also be used as an early warning system to keep an eye on ground movement that might eventually put lives or property in danger, such as a shifting embankment under a railway line or a sharp incline overlooking a road.
In April, SatSense announced that it had secured £1.5 million in its latest round just ahead of its product launch. This investment comes from the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund - specifically Mercia Equity Finance - and the Government Future Fund, and brings the total funding that they have raised so far to just under £3 million.
