RideTandem - the affordable and sustainable shared transport solution

by Startacus Admin
Next gen mobility beyond the big cities - RideTandem is a startup aiming to turn local transport providers into smart shuttles for work, education and more.
As well as the environmental impact of commuting to work via car, there is the issue of the lowest-earning 20% of the UK population not owning a car at all. While this might be fine if they work within the town or city in which they live, if they do not, commuting can become difficult or even impossible. Bus routes are decreasing, and longer journeys can be expensive and too infrequent or unreliable to be a good method of getting to work.
London-based startup RideTandem has created a platform to combat this issue, and help people commute to work outside of cities. The service is provided to employers rather than the employees, giving them a way to help their employees who otherwise might not be able to get to work. The transport cost is subsidised, or the business pays for it outright, providing free transport to their employees, and in return they find themselves with a wider talent pool. The RideTandem platform works with taxis, minicabs, and coach companies to provide this transport.
The passengers have access to a mobile app to book transport, provide payment if necessary, and live-track the location of said transport. The employer gets an overview of passenger numbers per transport so that they can be aware of staffing issues ahead of time, and detailed admin tools to track usage, cost, and more. Where possible, of course, the app will try to match transport to multiple passengers to reduce carbon costs and monetary costs alike, having people ride sharing as much as possible.
In May, RideTandem announced that it had raised £1.75 million in seed investment in a round led by 1818 Venture Capital, and participated in by Conduit Connect, the Low Carbon Innovation Fund, Ascension, Seedrs, and a number of angel investors. This funding will go towards expanding the reach of the startup and providing their services to more people.
