Revive - the startup striving to create a waste free world

by Startacus Admin
Sustainable and innovative - Revive is a Glasgow-based greentech startup that has created a palm oil alternative from used coffee grounds.
Palm oil is a versatile oil that is used in numerous everyday products, from shampoo to chocolate. It is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world. However, its production is one of the biggest factors in deforestation and carbon emissions; its negative impact on the world is as great as its positive impact in food and beauty product manufacturing. So, as usual, the obvious question is what can be done to reduce this impact or, even better, what can replace palm oil entirely?
Glasgow-based green-tech startup Revive is looking to replace palm oil with a substitute made from coffee grounds. Every year, around 500,000 tonnes of coffee grounds are produced in the UK alone, and the removal of this waste costs about £80 million per year. So the move to use their patent-pending process of recycling those coffee grounds into a palm oil alternative is one that stands to make a big impact on two fronts, and can help make coffee more sustainable.
So far, since their inception, the startup says that they have already saved 100,000kg of coffee grounds from the landfill, and they haven’t even made the move to the industrial scale yet. In fact, 2023 sees the start of trial with large brands across the UK and Europe and, hopefully, partnership announcements.
In 2019, Revive received £235,000 in funding from Zero Waste Scotland, and in early 2022, they completed a crowdfunding campaign with a £150,000 goal. In December, the startup announced that they had secured another £375,000 in a round led by the Gabriel Investment Syndicate, with participation from Scottish Enterprise and the University of Strathclyde. The funding will go towards growing the team and scaling up their manufacturing capabilities, allowing them to make the move from lab to industrial-scale production.
