The lowdown on Recycap, the Alicante-based startup and its innovative solution for recycling coffee capsules for home, commercial and industrial use.

recycap-logo-dark-red.Coffee pods have become popular thanks to their ability to balance the taste of proper ground coffee with the simplicity and convenience of instant coffee. The problem, of course, is that the coffee comes inside either plastic or aluminium pods that often don’t get recycled. Pods are moving more towards aluminium, as that isn’t as bad for the environment as plastic, but they will still sit in a landfill for 500 years. And because of the specific circumstances under which aluminium pods will be recycled - the coffee has to be removed completely, specifically, and then your local recycling facility needs to be equipped to handle tiny items like these - the landfill is where most of these millions of pods per day go. So how can we bring to people that which drives positive change more than anything else: convenience?

solution1Alicante-based startup Recycap has developed a device that will make it easier for coffee enthusiasts to recycle pods both at home and in the office. The React device is capable of recycling up to 600 pods per hour, which makes it just about able to keep up with Startacus’s needs, and is about the size of the coffee machine itself, so it can easily sit next to that on the counter top. Used pods go into the machine, which then cleans them out and separates pods from coffee leftovers to be disposed of properly. This saves the recycling facility from needing to have the ability to do the sorting themselves, and therefore those that can’t are saved from simply throwing the pods in a landfill. This adds up to nearly one hundred tonnes of pods which, again, might be mostly Startacus.

Recently, Recycap announced that they had raised €400,000 in funding from Veos Ventures. This funding is being used to bring the product to market and further develop the technology. The next obvious step will be to create a coffee pod machine with the React technology built in.
