Preply - language learning made easy

by Startacus Admin
Preply is an edtech platform that's on a mission to make learning a new language easier than ever before via live video lessons with tutors
We recently wrote about a startup that has created real-time translation earbuds so that anyone can communicate with people speaking other languages without issue. But wouldn’t it be even better if you could go to another country and speak to people in their language?
There are plenty of apps and lessons that you can buy to help you learn another language, but you can’t ask questions of a CD or the YouTube video you play while you fall asleep in the hopes that you’ll magically speak Japanese when you awake. You can’t get clarification or ask for a word to be spoken slower. Lessons with an actual person are the obvious choice, then, but do you have the time to go to night classes? Do you have the money to hire a one-on-one tutor?
Massachusetts-based startup Preply has the answer. With their platform, you can take one-on-one lessons at home, through video calls, from a tutor at times to suit your schedule.
From English, to French, to Japanese, to Russian, you will find the right tutor for you among the 49,000 already teaching through Preply, across 24 languages. Your first lesson with them is a trial, and if you are not happy with the tutor you have chosen, they will either give you a replacement for free or refund your fee. Lessons cost around $15-20 per hour, and they offer an enterprise package for employers to give their employees lessons.
Preply is doing great, securing a $35 million Series B funding round less than a year after their $10 million Series A round! Investors include Full In Partners and Owl Ventures, Hoxton Ventures, EduCapital, and others. In that time, their number of tutors grew fourfold and the number of lessons booked grew fivefold to 10 million.
We think they will do, as the Russians say, buterbrody. We have not taken lessons.
