patientMpower offers remote monitoring solution for COVID-19

patientMpower, the innovative app that is providing remote monitoring for those in self-isolation because of COVID-19We all know that the current direction for those who are concerned that they may have COVID-19 is to continue self-isolation and call your doctor or 111 (in the UK) for advice, not head to the hospital.
While this seems counterintuitive when you are feeling ill, the reality is that if you head to hospital without being told to, you are more at risk, those around you will be more at risk, and you are putting perhaps unnecessary extra tax on the hospital. And all for you to probably be sent back home anyway. But that does not mean that there aren’t ways for you to be monitored remotely.
Dublin-based medtech company patientMpower has developed a remote monitoring solution for COVID-19 in conjunction with the Health Service Executive. The app enables remote monitoring of those with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms who are in self-isolation. This is already in use in multiple hospitals across Ireland.
As well as allowing people to record their symptoms, their temperature, and their level of breathlessness, the app also links to a wireless pulse oximeter to measure their oxygen saturation, a key indicator of Coronavirus severity. Health workers can access this information at any time, securely, and use it to make decisions about whether the patient should remain in self-isolation or be moved to hospital.
In the US, the introduction of the patientMpower app at transplant centre NYU Langone reduced the need for outpatient visits for patients recovering from a lung transplant by two-thirds. This is the kind of reduction in hospital visits we need to be seeing for COVID-19.
Every person to walk into a hospital is another risk to the nurses, doctors, other patients, and to that person themselves, and in a pandemic like this, no one can afford unnecessary risk and exposure; remote monitoring has become vital.
