Navenio - innovative indoor location tracking

The Oxford-based tech startup that's created an innovative tracking solution that can be used to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19
It can often be useful to be able to keep track of where people are inside a building, but one of the most obvious places for this need is in hospitals.
Knowing where doctors and nurses are at all time can be of great value to ensuring that people are being treated in the most efficient way possible, that the right people can be sent to the right place more quickly, and that cleaners and porters can more easily move and work around other staff to minimise slowdown of patience flow. But not everyone wants the hassle of installing infrastructure to make things like beacons work, and using the WiFi network for this tracking can be inefficient.
This is where Oxford-based tech startup Navenio comes in. Based on award-winning research from the University of Oxford, the startup’s Core Location Engine uses proprietary sensor fusion algorithms, advanced signal processing, and machine learning to do its job of tracking.
All that is needed by those whose location is being tracked is a smartphone. There is no need to turn on additional battery-draining features that you otherwise wouldn’t use or even to install an app; the platform uses the signals the phone is already emitting and a building map to pinpoint a person’s location to within a few metres, including where they have been previously.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, tracking people’s locations within a hospital is more important than ever. Navenio can be used to ensure that high risk patients are not moved to locations where there is risk of infection, to track staff who are working with infected patients, and if a case should be diagnosed, that person’s previous steps can be traced in order to know who else might have come into contact with them and become infected.
Earlier in November, Navenio announced that it has secured a £400k grant from the government and Innovate UK for its work in helping to mitigate the impact of COVID-19. This funding will be used to accelerate the processing of floorplans and automated feature extraction, which will allow the startup to increase their deployment speed tenfold.
We think it goes without saying that technology like this, which can help keep not only patients but all of the staff working in hospitals safer during this pandemic, is of great value and is much needed.
