Naurt - the next GPS, only better

The innovative Brighton-based startup, Naurt, that has created a plug-and-play toolkit for high-precision, beacon-free tracking

naurt image GPS is all well and good, and it has served us well for some time now, minus the odd dead-end our satnav has turned us down, but it’s not all that accurate.

It isn’t possible, for example, to find your way through a building using GPS. You might be able to tell if you’re at the front or the back of the building, but you’re out of luck if you’re in labyrinthine corridors and looking for a specific room on who knows what floor. The answer to this kind of navigation, perhaps in museums or shopping centres, has been something like beacons.

This technology also has its limitations, with the requirement of hardware being installed and as soon as you step away from that tech, you’re lost again. So what might be the next step?

naurt Brighton-based tech startup Naurt believe that they have created the next GPS. With accuracy down to an impressive 10cm, their beacon-free tracking solution can not only tell you what corridor of what floor of a building you’re on, but in which hand you’re holding your phone. The easily integratable plug-and-play toolkit they have built is hardware agnostic and works inside and outside, across any border.

And that is about all we can say about it, because they are understandably quiet about how it actually works, other than to say that it takes advantage of 5 key innovations in the tracking space, including sensor fusion. We suspect espionage gnomes are also involved somewhere.

In early March, Naurt announced that it had raised £500,000 in pre-seed funding, which will go towards expanding operations. With applications ranging from transportation and logistics, to smart cities and potentially autonomous vehicles, to entertainment, we look forward to seeing what Naurt looks like in action when the public beta starts at the end of Q1 this year.

In the interim, if you're interested in innovations like this and in Smart Cities in general, why not join us at our upcoming Smart Cities event. Book your ticket now!
