Narratio - empowerment of young people through creative expression

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on Narratio, the innovative global platform helping young people, particularly displaced young people to have their voices heard.
When refugees or asylum-seekers are displaced from their homes, it is often only the beginning of their problems. Even when they have found a new home, they frequently continue to face discrimination and prejudice. This adds onto the top of the trauma that they have already faced and fled, causing or worsening things like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. When these refugees and asylum-seekers are children, the damage can be worse, and it can become embedded, informing their development into adults.
Startup Narratio is aiming to be one of the ways in which young people can have their voices heard - particularly those of displaced young people. The startup ‘activates, supports, and highlights the creative expression’ of these young people by allowing them to share their stories through art, poetry, photography, and film. This is an important platform to not only allow people to express themselves - which can be cathartic and therapeutic in its own right - but also to go a long way to dispelling stereotypes and prejudices through their creativity.
In addition to this, Narratio also offers storytelling workshops, and has conducted in more than a dozen cities, across four countries, as they put it, ‘encountering hundreds of creative young people with untapped potential’. If this weren’t enough, the founder of Narratio, Ahmed Badr, helped set up the Narratio Fellowship. This is the only US-based initiative that builds cohorts of young, resettled refugee Fellows to shape and influence the global conversation around displacement and cultural production. It’s a year-long programme, in which participants learn to share stories through various mediums, and they all receive media training, leadership development, networking support, and academic advice.
With more than 40 participants from over 18 countries, Narratio is a free, empowering, and inclusive platform that will soon grow further as the startup launches outside of the US.
