Mush - the social network dedicated to new mums and parents

by Startacus Admin
Being a new parent is not easy. Even after you have the new little thing in your life topped up with nutrients, stopped the leaking, and turned down the volume (it’s possible that you might notice that not everyone at Startacus has children), there’s still the isolation.
The little things that you didn’t consider. The lack of understanding of the finer points of being a parent from those not in possession of brand new little people. The things that are harder to talk about, such as post-natal depression. (N.B You might want to check out new App Moment Health with regards to post-natal depression / support).
Despite the number of support services around, it isn’t always that easy to find the best kind of support - other people in the same position. All of this is compounded if you live in a small town or in the country or at sea. If only there were some kind of social network dedicated to new parents.
Mush is some kind of social network dedicated to new mums (and parents fullstop).
Conceived by two new mums who met in a London playground, Mush was the result of the two supporting each other in the following months and helping to keep each other sane.
They realised that there was a market - a need - for a service to help other new parents find the same kind of support and friendship. The app allows new parents to find other nearby new parents with children of around the same age and chat with them, arrange meetups, swap and sell, and join groups.
You can even discover and review places around you based on child-oriented criteria such as breastfeeding-friendly, playground on-site, etc.
It is worth noting that, although the website uses the term ‘mum’ at every opportunity, their FAQ does specify that Mush is as much for dads - there are, after all, a large number of single dads without support, and Mush doesn’t want to exclude them.
The 300,000-member-strong app has recently received £2m in funding in a round led by Octopus Ventures, giving them more opportunity to expand and reinforce their efforts to make a difference with their social media platform.
This funding is added to over a million pounds raised previously through seed funding and crowdfunding and, as well as the large member base, is a pretty good indication of just how much this startup is both needed and wanted.
