Motoklik - empowering confidence in motorsport

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on Motoklik, the innovative Irish tech startup that's created an AI-powered device to tell motorcycle racers the best suspension setup for the track they're riding on
Motorsports are dangerous. This is not surprising information if you watch riders on their dirt bikes sliding through rock-filled mud and flying off the tops of ramps, but it’s not only the more extreme end of motorsports that can result in serious injury or death.
Bikes and ATVs can be dangerous for casual riders, and it doesn’t take a lot for the rider to come off. One of the main issues cited by riders is suspension setup, the feel of which is what many go on solely, and so something to help give more data about what that suspension is doing is needed to help keep riders safer.
That is what Kilkenny-based motorsport tech startup Motoklik has built. Their product was created in response to their research that found that 90% of motorsport racers report that their suspension is too soft or too firm, and they often don’t like to mess with it and do not know what needs to be done with it anyway; they lack the data to know exactly what the issue is and what needs to be changed to fix it.
Motoklik uses a suspension position monitoring system that incorporates a cloud-based artificial intelligence and machine learning platform that they created in collaboration with the European Space Agency. This combination will not only tell riders the best setup for the conditions of the track they are riding on, but will give highly accurate details of what the suspension is doing and what needs to be tweaked.
Founded in 2018 by Jens Köpke after a dirt bike accident of his own, Motoklik is a client company of the European Space Agency’s Business Incubation Centre thanks to its use of Earth-observation data and the aforementioned collaboration. In March, the startup announced that it had raised €300,000 in a seed round from both Enterprise Ireland and private investors. This funding will help increase the size of the Motoklik team and finalise the product’s design ahead of launching.
AI is certainly at the core of lots of innovative startups aiming to make things better whether you're on two wheels like this one, or four - startups like Provisio which we previously featured, for example.
