Motitech - fitness technology for older people

by Startacus Admin

The lowdown on Motitech, the FitTech startup that's on a mission to help motivate older people and people with dementia to be physically active...
We have written recently about startups focused on the physical and mental wellbeing of the older generation, with the likes of Grandpal creating opportunities for local people
As we have said before, sitting in a nursing home without many activities or stimulation can quickly lead to a decline in physical and mental health. When it comes to the physical, not every resident is able to go out and about by themselves, and not every resident will have family to visit and take them out. Staff are stretched thin, and the result is too little physical activity.
This is where Norwegian ‘AgeTech’ startup Motitech comes in. The idea of their Motiview is simple - the resident sits on an exercise bike and pedals their way through Singapore, Stockholm, Paris, or any number of locations on the TV screen.
Exercise has a whole host of benefits for older people, and Motitech says the documented benefits of exercise with Motiview are:
- Improves mobility and self-efficacy
- Reminiscence and social interaction
- Better strength and balance, prevents falling
- Faster rehabilitation
- Increased appetite, while reduced overweight
- Better sleep, less pain, less medication
- Improves physical and mental wellbeing
The videos created for Motiview are custom-made in collaboration with customers and users, meaning that the residents that use it will be cycling through familiar surroundings, which is highly beneficial for reminiscence, particularly important for users with dementia.
In July 2019, Motitech announced a partnership with British Cycling and Sport England. This partnership will see greater opportunity to deliver Motitech’s products and events, including Road Worlds for Seniors 2019 cycling event, Motitech’s global activity programme for cycling within nursing homes and care centres.
The more focus placed on taking care of older people’s physical and mental health the better, and we certainly look forward to seeing what a startup like Motitech will go from here.
