MindMate - the brain health app

by Startacus Admin
MindMate - the app that helps users, including those with dementia, to become more active & improve their brain health via mental exercises, workout routines and recipes

There are an estimated 50 million people in the world living with dementia, a number that will almost double every 20 years. But there are things that can be done to help slow and in some cases prevent dementia.
MindMate is an app, born from the personal experiences of the three creators, that is designed to keep the brain active and entertained, while supporting those diagnosed with dementia and those caring for them where applicable.
Of course, the app is not restricted to only people with dementia, as it promotes a healthy lifestyle and healthy mind for anyone. It is based around the FINGER study, a randomized controlled trial that combined lifestyle interventions in those with Alzheimer’s disease, giving them a daily routine that combined brain games, a nutritious diet, regular exercise, and social interaction.
The app’s brain-stimulating games are designed to challenge the 4 core, cognitive areas of problem solving, speed, memory, and attention. These help to keep the mind healthy and active.
Physically, the app helps you to stay healthy with nutrition advice and healthy recipes taken from the MIND diet, centred around wholesome, nutritious foods like whole grains, vegetables, and fish, as well as healthy fats like nuts and olive oil. The diet also helps keep blood pressure in check. Those who follow the MIND diet have scored much higher on memory tests and thinking skills, and can be the equivalent of 7.5 years younger in terms of brain health. Daily exercise routines help you to stay healthy, too, which can dramatically decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
The My Life section of the app is a secure place to store photos and memories, and allows users to share with friends and family, increasing social interaction. A 2007 study found significant improvements in both cognitive and affective function using reminiscence therapy with people living with dementia.
MindMate was created with a board of advisors consisting of the Glasgow University Geriatric Medicine Department, a clinical psychologist, a private physiotherapist, a sport scientist and a qualified nutritionist. It has already won more than a dozen international awards, and it isn’t exactly surprising.
An app that can be of such great benefit to those living or recently diagnosed with dementia, and to those around them, deserves all the recognition it can get.
