4000x2000

The lowdown on Metaseum, the Paris-based startup that enables you to visit museums and galleries all over the world - from the comfort of your own home.

4000x2000 - 4With more businesses trying to build on the metaverse - basically virtual reality worlds that have the potential to allow people to do things that would otherwise be difficult or impossible for them - we get an increasingly wide range of businesses stepping onto the scene. From basic social get-togethers with people from around the world, to digital events and conferences, the metaverse is being utilised for many things.

Paris-based tech startup Metaseum is one such business taking to the metaverse. Metaseum is, as the name suggests, a metaverse-based museum - or more accurately, a space for museums to set up a digital counterpart. The startup wants to work not only with established museums and art galleries, but with individual artists as well, allowing anyone to purchase a plot of digital land and a building to house their exhibits, which can be chosen from something pre-made or that they can design themselves. These exhibits might be dinosaur bones, paintings, sculptures, or even monuments from around the world.

4000x2000-1You can’t stand at the bottom of the Eiffel Tower in any normal museum, or get your hands on priceless, ancient statues. Metaseum says that because these exhibits are in the metaverse, where the laws of reality don’t apply, it opens up the possibilities so that visitors can interact in different ways, such as speaking to the subject of a painting, or to the painter, or perhaps even bungee jumping from the Eiffel Tower. And you can do so alongside friends from anywhere in the world.

Of course, it’s hard to mention the metaverse without NFTs being part of the conversation, and sure enough, Metaseum are working on partnerships to develop NFT collections, with paintings, sculptures, and more from established museums and institutions. The first collection they are releasing, on December 16 2022, is of what they say is the first scientifically accurate NFTs in the world - a collection of jellyfish, made in partnership with the Aquarium de Paris.

There are museums and galleries around the world that house world-famous exhibits that not everyone will get the chance to visit, so bringing these into the metaverse is the next best thing. And by doing so, perhaps they will entice a wider audience to what they call the metaverse of culture.
