The lowdown on Memory Lane Games, the healthtech startup that's creating apps to support care and quality of life for people living with dementia.

Z8k4sw5D_400x400.We wrote a while ago about startups creating fun and interactive games and experiences for those living with dementia, and for people at risk of having memories slip away simply due to an unengaging environment, like a care home with insufficient activities.

Within the next few years, there will be 1 million people in the UK alone living with dementia, and with underfunded and under-staffed care for these people, small ways to provide comfort and a degree of support for them that doesn’t increase strain on the care system is of great benefit.

Isle of Man-based healthtech startup Memory Lane Games has created an app full of memory games designed for fun rather than competition.

heroPoster.90a3ba4bIn its Popular Topics category, the games revolve around topics of common knowledge, such as animals, geography, music, flowers, etc., with simple quizzes to identify what you are looking at or answer related questions (an example given is “Fawns are the babies of which animal?”. The Local Nostalgia category, as the name suggests, is full of questions about your local area, such as identifying a local street from an old photo, or answering local knowledge and trivia questions. This type of more personal memory exercise is of particular benefit to those with dementia. A third category coming soon to the app is a personalised one, in which friends and family can build their own quiz for you with their own photos, questions, and range of multiple choice answers, which could be packed full of in-jokes and nostalgia that stimulate the memory.

In October, Memory Lane Games announced that it had raised £700,000 in funding from international family offices in the UK, Europe, and Canada. This comes hot on the heels of a £285,000 round in 2020, and, with grant support from the Isle of Man, this brings the startup’s total funding to more than £1 million. This funding will go towards growing the startup’s team and capability to produce more games.
