Manchester Startup Month

by Startacus Admin
So it’s the beginning of another month and that can mean only one thing here at Startacus - it’s time for us to begin examining the startup scene of a brand spanking new UK / Ireland City. So far in our startup saga we have spent time looking at Belfast, Bristol and Glasgow, examining the startups, events, people and places that make them the great self starter cities that they are. Now it’s time for one we have been looking forward to for quite some time…. Manchester!
Often referred to as ‘The Capital of the North’ Manchester City has a population of around 520,000 and occupies the central and Southern portion of the Greater Manchester Urban Area, home to around 2.7 million people. It is the city of Manchester alongside the 9 other metropolitan boroughs of Bury, Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan which we will be featuring over the course of the next month.
During the industrial revolution Manchester and its surrounding towns experienced an enormous growth and development which was fueled as its position at the centre of the world’s cotton industry - an industry so inextricable from the city that during this period it earned itself the pseudonym of ‘Cottonopolis’ owing to the hundreds of cotton mills which dominated the skyline of the entire area.
Following its rapid expansion into the world's first ‘industrialised city’ in the 19th century, the city has seen a more modest growth in the past century with a broad diversification of industry which now places it as one of the countries foremost centres for finance, technology, manufacturing and most recently \as home to one of its most thriving startup communities. It is this burgeoning startup community that we will be taking a good long look at over the course of the next month.
If you are a Manchester based startup, self starter, creative , investor or simply someone who wants to give a shout out to this great city then drop us an email to iam@startacus.net for a chat about how you can get involved.
