Krisp - AI-powered noise cancelling

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on Krisp, the innovative app that uses AI to remove unwanted background noise from your online calls and meetings.
As the pandemic took hold and more and more of us started to work from home, we probably all found ourselves apologising a lot more than normal - for the children shouting and crying in the background of our calls, for the dogs barking in the background of our calls, for the clunking and gurgling of the heating pipes in the background of our calls… Mostly, we had to get used to having meetings in noisier environments than we were used to, and trying to ignore the cacophony in the background while others were speaking (because we all know there’s always someone who doesn’t put themselves on mute when they’re not speaking).
As we have written numerous times over the pandemic period, even after this has passed, the number of people working from home will remain higher than it was before, and this ostensibly simple issue of background noise during calls will become less understandable and acceptable.
California-based startup Krisp has been using artificial intelligence to take on the challenge of helping people reduce background noise without building themselves some kind of at-home sound studio.
By using over 20,000 noises and 50,000 different speakers, the startup has taught its AI to identify background noises versus people speaking so that it can remove background noise from both ends of a call, whether this is barking dogs or echo from an empty room. Krisp is downloaded as an app and can be used with any platform you are using for your calls, and because it works locally on your device, it is completely secure. The app works on low power so that it doesn’t drain your battery when used on a phone, and it can be used to record your calls if necessary. Currently in beta for Apple devices is a new feature to add a virtual background to your video calls, if your chosen platform doesn’t have one you like.
Krisp is free to download and to use for the first 140 minutes of calls every week. After this, there are subscription options, and whether you are an individual or a team of up to 50, you can use the app on an unlimited basis for only $5 per month.
