King of the Vikings just got a VR makeover

What do you think of when you think ‘Ireland’?
You think ‘Vikings’, of course!
What do you think of when you think ‘Waterford’?
Why, you think ‘Vikings’, of course!
Waterford was founded by Viking raiders in 914 AD, so it was only natural that Waterford be host to ‘King of the Vikings’, the world’s first virtual reality Viking adventure.
In conjunction with Ireland’s Ancient East, Waterford City & County Council, and Waterford Treasures, and created by Waterford’s own digital content agency Emagine, the virtual reality adventure is part of a Viking experience in Ireland’s oldest city. This isn’t a large medieval museum or park - in fact, the entire thing consists of a very small stone ‘fortress’, a longboat reconstruction, and an authentic Viking house in the middle of the ruins of a 13th Century Franciscan Friary - but nonetheless makes for an interesting, entertaining, and educational outing. Unfortunately we were unable to find any actual footage of what goes on behind the Oculus Rift headset while you sit in that house, but we know that the whole experience of VR and re-enactors’...re-enacting is 16 minutes long, and the general response of those who have visited has been positive.
With the increased accessibility of virtual reality and plenty of design and digital content studios around to create for it, we should start to see a rise in experiences like this King of the Vikings, providing an additional way to entertain and educate on history, engaging a wider audience than might otherwise be achieved.
