Robots-as-a-Service; Barcelona-based startup Keybotic develops an autonomous robot dog that can carry out industrial maintenance and inspection checks.

Dogs are great. They keep you company, make you feel better, fit in small spaces to search for survivors of disasters, and make us smile. Robots are also great, and we’ll be happy to one day serve them in return for sparing our lives. So what happens when you combine the two? You might not get a cuddly, playful robot who likes to round up sheep, but you do get a little robot dog that’s capable of risky industrial maintenance and inspection checks. Can your labradoodle do that? Are you imagining a labradoodle in a little hard hat and high-vis jacket, making notes on a clipboard? Because we encourage you to do so now.

keybotic-stairsBarcelona-based robotics startup Keybotic has a robots-as-a-service platform for businesses to bring in the startup’s robot dog, Keyper, to carry out those potentially dangerous inspections and perform maintenance, specifically in the chemicals, security, oil and gas, and mining industries. As well as being able to fit into smaller spaces than a human, it doesn’t have the pesky deficiencies that our squashy selves have, such as getting all unwell if we breathe in gas leaks or making a fuss about smoke inhalation, so they can be put in more awkward, riskier situations that you wouldn’t want to put your labradoodle in. Plus, your labradoodle can’t read instruments and send real-time alerts about anomalies and potential dangers.

These alerts, along with pictures, are sent to a centralised control platform in order to help digitise industrial plants and predict incidents before they happen, making industrial businesses safer and more productive, and minimising risk to workers.

Recently, Keybotic announced that they had raised €3 million in funding in a round led by family offices in Spain. The startup already works with clients such as Carburos Metálicos, BASF, and Barcelona Firefighters, and these funds will be used to further expand their operations, as well as further development. This funding comes after Keyper was awarded first place in the DARPA Robotic Challenge. That’s a good robot dog.
